Unlocking the Power of Internal Linking: What I’m Working On This Week

A few days ago, I had an interesting moment during a client meeting. We started out discussing her website, but at the end of the meeting, her friend arrived and my client introduced me to her friend as her business consultant. Why? Because we ended up talking about so much more than just her website—marketing strategies, business growth, and all the little things that go into running a successful small business. This got me thinking: while every business is unique, there are fundamental tasks that every small business owner focuses on to build the momentum and grow of their business.

This realization inspired me to start a new blog series called "What I'm Working On"—a space where I’ll share the marketing strategies, website optimizations, and business tips I’m currently focused on. My hope is that these bite-sized insights may help other service-based businesses to take actionable steps each week to elevate your own business. This week, I’m diving into something that might seem small, but is incredibly powerful: internal linking.

Why Internal Linking Is My Focus This Week

If you’ve been following my blog, you know I’ve covered topics ranging from DIY vs. Hiring a Professional for Website Design to Signs It’s Time to Hire a Squarespace Web Designer. Each post is packed with valuable insights, but one thing I’ve realized is that they could be working even harder for my site’s SEO—and that’s where internal linking comes in.

Neil Patel, one of my go-to SEO experts, often talks about the importance of internal linking. According to his guide, internal links help search engines understand the structure of your site, distribute link equity, and keep visitors engaged longer. It’s a simple concept with a big impact, and that’s why I’m making it a priority this week.

My Plan for Internal Linking

So, what does this actually look like in practice? Here’s how I’m approaching it:

  1. Connecting Relevant Blog Posts: I’m going back through my posts and looking for natural opportunities to link related content. For example, in my post DIY vs. Hiring a Professional for Website Design, I’ll add a link to my 5 Things that Make a Website Stand Out post. These two topics are closely related, and linking them will help readers easily navigate between them while giving both posts a little SEO boost.

  2. Enhancing User Experience: My goal is to make it easier for you, my readers, to find all the information you need without having to search too hard. By strategically placing internal links, I’m guiding you to other posts that might answer your questions or give you further insights into the topics you’re interested in. For instance, if you’re interested in optimizing your website, you might also find value in my 5 Signs It’s Time to Hire a Professional Squarespace Web Designer post that highlights when it might be time for professional help, or Website vs. Instagram: Where Should You Focus Your Efforts? for insights on balancing your focus between your website and social media platforms.

  3. Boosting SEO: Internal linking also helps search engines understand what my site is about and which pages are most important. By linking from one blog post to another, I’m signaling to Google that these pages are related and relevant, which can improve their rankings. For example, linking my SEO-focused posts to each other will strengthen their visibility in search results.

What I Hope to Accomplish

By the end of this week, my goal is to have a more cohesive, user-friendly, and SEO-optimized blog. I want every visitor to find value and easily discover related content that keeps them engaged. Plus, I’m aiming to improve the performance of individual blog posts by making them work together more effectively through internal linking.

If you’re looking to optimize your own website and you already have an existing blogs with a number of posts, I highly recommend starting with internal linking. It’s a small step that can lead to significant improvements in both your SEO and user experience. And if you want to dive deeper, Neil Patel’s article on internal linking is a fantastic resource—you can check it out here.

Stay tuned for more insights and strategies in my "What I'm Working On" series. I’ll be sharing my weekly experiences with email marketing, social media, and SEO fine-tuning. My hope is that these updates not only provide a glimpse into my process, but also spark ideas and inspiration for you to explore and enhance your own business practices.
